More often than not, we are filled with worries, stress and negative thoughts. It is in our nature to protect ourselves and the fear of anything going wrong manifest itself into worry, stress, sadness and sometimes even anger. The problem with negative thoughts though is that you spend so much time on them that you do not have a clear view of finding a solution or appreciating all the other good things that are happening in your life. Negativity is a thief of Joy. I am not saying do not stress… that is almost inevitable, but you can control how much time you spend nursing these negative thoughts. the more time you spend on them the more you feed them to grow.
I for one can testify to this as I would classify myself as a worrywart or a stresser. but I worked on these problems. I am not there yet but I can see improvement and I would like to share what has worked for me, maybe it can also work for you. Disclaimer: I am not a professional or trained in anyway, anything I say here is purely based on my experiences and what has worked for me.
Be aware of your thoughts.
Thinking happens 24/7 and sometimes you don’t even realize you are doing it. negative thoughts have a way of just spinning out of control. it can start as a match spark and literally end up in an inferno. So if you are aware you will be able to call yourself into order and nip it in the bud.
Be honest with yourself
You need to admit to yourself that you allow negativity to run your life. this is so personal and no one has to know but you. you can only work on something and fix it once you have established your problem. sit down, speak to yourself (mentally, verbally if you prefer or write it down) and admit that you have that problem
Count your blessings…twice
We tend to think that blessings are that new car that you bought, the expensive shoe, the gorgeous house that you just bought or all materialistic things that you achieve. Bare in mind there is someone out there who does not have R10.00 to catch a taxi to go somewhere, wears torn clothes or lives on the streets. So the roof you have over your head, irrespective of the level of opulence, the car that you drive or the fact that you have public transport fare, and the clothing that you are wearing are a major blessing. There is a difference between aspiring for more and disregarding what you have. It is more that okay to want for better but acknowledge and be thankful for what you have.
The most important blessing… The air that you breathe, I do not have to go into any more detail on that.
Turn your problem into a positive.
This is often difficult but it can be done. Everything that happens in life good or bad will teach you something. Only, you have to allow it. If you touch a foreign object and it burns your hand will you ever touch it again? I suppose not. For problems that happen out of your control remember, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. Allow it to turn you into a stronger person.
Focus on you.
Often we judge ourselves based on our peers. If your peer has more than you , you feel less accomplished conveniently forgetting that everyone’s circumstances are different. STOP THAT. Look at your situation and while working on achieving your goals, work with that otherwise you will spend so much time thinking about what you don’t have that you will neglect the work you need to put in to achieve your goals.
Self love is magic! when you love yourself completely you will not allow such a thing as negativity to steal your joy. The minute you master the art of self love, the above mentioned will come easy.
Last but not least look in you mirror and SMILE at that gorgeous human being looking back at you, S/He is you greatest ally.
